Bloomington / Monroe County was selected as an ACHIEVE Community because of its rich collaborations and strong leadership. ACHIEVE strives to bring together local leaders who have the drive and ability to make Policy, Systems, and Environmental changes that will improve the health and wellness of their communities. ACHIEVE is guided by coaches from the Monroe County YMCA and City of Bloomington Parks and Recreation as well as heavily supported by the Active Living Coalition. It is these collaborations that allow ACHIEVE to be successful in inspiring and enacting change to make the healthy choice the easy choice in our community.
2011 ACHIEVE Mini Grants
In 2011, seven community organizations and businesses were awarded mini grants to make health and wellness improvements.
Active Living Coalition - $3,000
Healthy Restaurant Bloomington – Partnering with the Bloomington Independent Restaurant Association (BIRA) to assess local restaurants and provide feedback on how they might offer healthy choices to their patrons. Restaurants that meet a certain percentage of criteria will receive the Healthy Restaurant Bloomington designation. Click here for a full listing of healthy restaurants in Bloomington.
Bloomington Developmental Learning Center - $3,000
Increasing access to Physical Activity – Providing preschool children access to indoor areas that meet or exceed recommended safety standards for performing large-muscle activities. Through the use of play equipment, preschool students will have 60 minutes of structured physical activity each day.
Bloomington Meadows Hospital - $3,000
Employee Nutrition & Healthy Living – Improving the amount of healthy choices for employees and patients in the cafeteria through the development and implementation of a healthy options policy as well as education for employees on proper nutrition.
City of Bloomington Parks and Recreation - $500
Improving Trail Signage – Developing and printing a self-guiding trail map for more than 10 miles of nature trails at Griffy Lake to increase trail usage. Maps will also contain information on the health benefits of trails. Click here for a full list of local trails.
Indiana University Health – Bloomington Hospital - $3,000
Healthy Nutrition and Healthy Lifestyles – Improving access to healthy options in the cafeteria and training health care providers to discuss physical activity, tobacco use, and chronic disease prevention with patients.
Monroe County Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Coalition - $3,000
Comprehensive Smoke-Free Law for Ellettsville – Create a grass-roots campaign to increase awareness of the need for smoke-free spaces and develop local support for a smoke-free law in the city of Ellettsville.
Twisted Limb Paperworks - $2,500
Living Wall Garden – Purchase supplies for, build, and maintain a living wall garden to provide fresh produce to employees. Twisted Limb will also create and display a sign explaining the benefits of the living wall garden, both of which are visible from the B-Line trail in downtown Bloomington.

The Project School - $2000
Development of outdoor classrooms and gardens – Encouraging proper nutrition and physical activity. This will also provide healthy food options to the school and to those in need in the community.
Bloomington Meadows Hospital - $1,000
Encouraging a healthy lifestyle – Increasing the level of physical activity of staff and patients within the whole organization.
Monroe County School Garden Collaborative - $2,000
Build school-based garden ecosystems – These gardens will be located at Arlington Heights Elementary, Clear Creek Elementary, and Edgewood Intermediate schools. Teachers will educate the students about composting and gardening curriculum tied to 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th grade Indiana Department of Education standards for Health, Physical Education, Science, English, Math, and Art.
Monroe County Public Library - $860
Provide lunch and learn sessions – These lunch and learn sessions will promote proper nutrition and physical activity. Participants who attend Lunch and Learn sessions will receive copies of Eat This, Not That…
IU Health Bloomington Hospital - $1,335
Create a comprehensive stairway initiative – This program will encourage employees to be more active by taking the stairs instead of the elevator.
Boys and Girls Club of Bloomington - $2,000
Healthy Transportation – Moving away from carbon based transportation to a pollutant free, healthy transportation system for older Club members and form a Junior Riders Biking Club and changing policy to promote biking.
Active Living Coalition - $805
Providing educational trainings for making policy changes – Improve local organization’s capacity to develop policies and create a culture of accountability for policy and systems change in Monroe County
